Here is the latest news update from the Barony: First, thank you to THL Svava Jorudottir for all her work as Chatelaine welcoming newcomers and coordinating demos for two terms. Next a warm welcome to our new Chatelaine, Lady Kattera Doplerin. She and her team of deputies will continue to welcome newcomers to the SCA or to our local area, coordinate demos, parades, and other outreach.

The election process continues. I’ve received a number of ballots by mail or hand-delivered. The deadline for returning a ballot is October 18th before 2pm. The ballot count will start at 2pm at the Buffalo Inn, 3278 Buffalo Drive, South Park 15129.

The ballot counting is just one of the many things happening on Oct 18th at the Buffalo Inn. Fencing and Rattan practice will be held there. Indoors there will be artisans playtime including make and donation largess, a weavers green, and a miniscriptorium. No food will be provided, but you are welcome to bring food and beverages to eat, drink, and share if you choose.

Agincourt Event will be held the following week on Saturday October 24th at Big Knob Grange, 336 Grange Road, Rochester, PA 15074. 9:00am-10:00pm. You need to register online for lunch and feast. Starting November 1st, Fencing and Rattan practice move indoors. They will be held at Become Better Sport Performance and Personal Training, 5372 Enterprise Blvd, Bethel Park, PA 15102 from 1:00pm to 5:00pm. Archery and Thrown Weapons may continue outside at the Washington Blvd and Allegheny River Blvd until the November Archery potluck. Watch storfrettir for any updates.

Sunday November 15, Harvest Revel at Byron and Ariella’s Castle, 755 Stonegate Drive, Wexford, PA 15090. Potluck, Pie Contest, martial practices, barony social and general meeting.

Sunday November 29th – Archery Potluck at Chieftain Archery Club, 4711 Leechburgh Rd, New Kensington, PA 15068 from 11:00am-3:00pm

Saturday Dec 19th – Baronial Investiture Event (for out next Baronage) – Unitarian Universalist Church of the North Hills, 2359 W. Ingomar Rd, Pittsburgh, PA 15237 from 9:00am-9:00pm. There is a lunch and a feast which is a separate cost.

Saturday Jan 16th, Baronial 12th Night at Buffalo Inn and Home Economics Buildings in South Park from 9:00am – 7:30pm. This is a free event, with potluck and lots for fun things.

It’s time again for the monthly A&S Round-Up! October is chockful of exciting A&S opportunities, from old favorites like Agincourt to new monthly A&S Nights, so I’m sure there’s something that interests everyone! As always, please reach out if I’m missing your guild, meet-up, or gathering and I’ll add it to my list for this and future months!

Just as with the last two months, there is an election related meeting that will host A&S activities! There will be an Artisans’ Playtime at the Ballot Counting Meeting on Sunday October 18^th at Buffalo Inn, including largesse make-and-donate, a weavers’ green, and mini Scriptorium. Bring your crafts and hang out with your artisan community as we await the announcement of our next Baron and Baroness! (Contact point – Hara Kikumatsu)

This month, there are THREE A&S Nights, as gatherings at THLady Emilia’s and Mistress Ts’vee’a’s join the calendar! First, there is an A&S Night at THLady Emilia’s in Carrick on Monday, October 12^th; this home is wheelchair accessible and peanut-free. Then, there is an A&S Night at Mistress Ts’vee’a’s in Stanton Heights on Wednesday, October 21^st; this home is both wheelchair accessible and free of pet allergens. Finally, our standard A&S Night at THLady Elinor’s in Stanton Heights has been moved one week to Thursday, October 29^th to accommodate our delightfully busy schedule! All A&S Nights are inclusive of all kinds of artisans, are drop-in/drop-out, and welcome you regardless of whether you have a project in-progress. Dancing is now a twice-monthly affair! Though the monthly practice at Whitehall Library was cancelled, come join Lady Diana Chandler at dance practice at Baldwin Library on Thursday, October 15^th at 6pm, whether you’re a beginner stepper, experienced dancer, or medieval musician! If you’re planning ahead, dance will continue to be scheduled on the first Fridays and second Thursdays of the month and we welcome all, regardless of experience level. Scriptorium is Monday, October 19^th from 6:30p-9:30p in Stanton Heights and its perfect time to finish your assignments for Agincourt! Come and hang out with Magister Owen while we work on scrolls, blanks, or award medallions, regardless of your skill or current scribal assignments. If you have any interest in calligraphy, illumination, or wordsmithing for award scrolls, here’s a great place to learn. (Contact point – Magister Owen Tegg)

Also new to this month, there will be a Cooks’ Guild Meeting on Sunday, October 11^th at 5:30pm at the castle of Duke Byron and Duchess Sir Ariella! Support our recently revived cooks’ guild with their Ukrainian-themed gathering this month. This is also “show and tell” for cookbooks, give away for kitchen ingredients/items you don’t need, and general Cook camaraderie. (Contact point – Duchess Sir Ariella of Thornbury)

Fiber Arts Guild is meeting on Monday, October 26^th this month – join Lady Ilsa of the Debatable Lands at Mistress Ts’vee’a’s home in Stanton Heights from 7pm-9pm for a casual gathering of fiber artists with their works-in-progress, plans, and good conversation. Every Tuesday – the Debatable Choir (voice) and Consort (instruments) meet in Spring Garden from 7pm-9:30pm. If you’ve been interested in the performing arts in the barony, whether it is choir, consort, or I Genesii, now’s the time to start! The Debatable Consort has a short performance at Agincourt and the Debatable Choir has just started the music for their 12^th Night performance! If you’re looking for A&S details at local events this month, Agincourt XIX on October 24^th is full of opportunities! There will be an A&S Display, Scribal Playtime, a Kumihimo salon, a Moneyers’ Guild display, a performance by the Debatable Consort, a Debatable Brewers Guild Roundtable, *and* a full class schedule that has yet to be announced. Thank you to A&S Coordinator Maestra Lisabetta and autocrat Baroness Vika for putting in so much work to make sure there are arts and sciences at Agincourt! Baronial A&S Minister

The next business meeting will be Wednesday October 7th at 8pm. The meeting is both online and in-person. If you plan to attend in-person, the address is 1105 Shady Avenue, Pittsburgh 15232. One thing that will happen at this meeting is voting for a new Chatelaine. Svava’s second term is up and there has been a call for letters. It is not too late to submit a letter. You should send and letter of intent to chatelaine@debatablelands.org and to bmdl@aethelmearc.org.

There are only 2 weeks left until ballot counting day. That is when we tally the ballots to see who will be the next baronage. I will be at practice today until 3pm if you want to turn in your ballot in person. If that doesn’t work for you, you can also hand deliver to my house and put it through the mail slot in the front door. Please make sure your ballot is a sealed envelope. If you have a return address on it, I will use a sharpie to cover it. The ballots should be anonymous. You can also turn it in before 2pm on ballot counting day October 18th any time before 2pm.

Hello, fencers! Due to rain tomorrow, we will be unable to have fencing practice at our normal site. However, Ariella has graciously offered that we can hold practice at the castle! We will start at 11, and wrap up around 2:30. The stellar tournament will be rescheduled to a future date. Please spread the word!

Hello, Fencers! This Sunday (9/20), we will start practice at 11 AM so folks in town for Coronation can join us for practice before heading home!

In addition, we will hold our next stellar tournament, run by jorundr! It will begin at 2pm. Format is round-robin, “Bring your Worst Form” as voted by the other participants.

Salve Accolens!

The time is upon us to prepare for a new Baronial Arts and Sciences Championship! The winner of this contest will be named Baronial A&S Champion for the next year, and will represent our Barony in next year’s Seven Pearls Competition! Representing our Barony for the last year has been the most profound honor I’ve received in my career as an artisan, and I am looking forward to passing this baldric and all it represents to our next Champion.

Our next A&S Champion will be chosen at the Debatable Lands 12th Night Celebration on January 16th, 2027.

Our theme this year is one that is close to my heart: symbolism. In a time period before widespread literacy, communication through symbols, iconography, and metaphor was required to convey knowledge and meaning.

What constitutes a “symbolic” project? Like most symbols, it’s up to your interpretation! It can be an object featuring a heraldic display to identify ownership, works of calligraphed text, perhaps woven or embroidered imagery, or it can be a piece that symbolizes your growth as an artist. We want to see something that conveys a deeper meaning beyond the surface level appearance of your art.

Documentation is strongly encouraged, but not required.

Nobles! Welcome!! The feast of St. Crispin is upon us and the Barony-Marche of the Debatable Lands wishes you to join us for a day of fighting, fun, art, and food. The event will be at Big Knob Grange, 336 Grange Road, Rochester, PA 15074. Your autocrat is Baroness Vika Vyborgskaia.

A&S is back again this year so I ask all teachers to bring your knowledge to others. We have room for displays and hands-on activities. Heavy Weapons and Rapier combatants, take to the field and fight until your arms ache from your weapons. What would Agincourt be without archers? Target archers, get your bows! Sharpen your throwing weapons, we have plans just for you! Did you hear rumors of combat archery and siege weapons joining in the fun? Yes they can! There will also be a family activity tent.

As always, we can accommodate food allergies and sensitivities; however, we can’t promise no cross-contamination. We do our best to keep it to a minimum, but we don’t have cooking facilities that are fully allergen-free.
