Archery Stellar Tournament Tomorrow, Thrown Weapons Practice Cancelled (8/24)

Salve Accolens!

Reminder that we will be holding the next Sky List Stellar Tournament during our regular weekly archery practice tomorrow.

The qualifier will be shot on the auxiliary line throughout the normal practice, with the final taking place at 1:30 pm.

Everyone is invited to participate – the Stellar Tournaments were set up as a way to allow people of all skill levels to experience martial tournament formats. The Sky List is usually held monthly, with the winner choosing the format of the next tournament – winners are allowed to defend the title up to three times in a row.

Also, Thrown Weapons practice is cancelled for tomorrow.

In case you weren’t at archery practice or the barony social last Sunday, archery practice for Sunday, June 8th is cancelled, due to Scarlet Guard Inn AND Iris Festival the day before.

Archery practice will resume on Sunday, June 15th, where we will be holding both the baronial archery and thrown weapons championships.

Barony Social and Meeting, June 1st

It’s supposed to be rainy and ugly all week, EXCEPT SUNDAY. So let’s enjoy being outdoors. Not only do we have the fencing and heavy tournaments, we’ll have our belated May barony social as well. June 1, 11:30-5:30, at the summer practice site on Washington Blvd. Parking is tight when we are all there. Please park close (pretend I drew lines again) and if you can please drop off your stuff then park down at the bike track. Bring your own food and drink, and projects if you want. We’ll have a quick meeting between the two tournaments.

Yours in service,

Ceindrech

Archery Practice tomorrow (5/4) is a GO!

Salve Accolens!

After consulting with the sages who portend the weather, reading the tea leaves, and sacrificing a goat (at least one of those things didn’t happen – your guess!), I’m making the call that Archery Practice tomorrow will proceed as planned.

I checked the site this morning, and apart from a few puddles near the parking lot outside of our normal traffic area, there was nothing I saw that would hinder us from having our regular practice. That said, there is rain forecasted from now until the time that practice usually starts, so the ground will be soggy and you will want to wear appropriate footwear.

Also, be aware that the Pittsburgh Marathon is tomorrow, and there will be several road closures that may obstruct your route to the practice site, so check this map of closures (we’re off to the northeast of the blue O in the upper right corner) before planning your drive in, and be prepared for related traffic delays.

I’ll continue to keep an eye on the weather and if it escalates to sudden downpours or persistent rain beyond what’s been forecasted, I’ll make a last-minute call should the need arise. Watch this and all our other usual spaces.

Yours in service,

Niall mac Raedwulf, Captain of the Archers

Gate work Sunday

For those of you who don’t follow the minutes of the business meetings, the Woodworking Guild has been granted some funds to build a new entrance gate for the Baronial encampment at Pennsic.

https://ee0r.com/sca/misc/proposal-gate-debatablelands.pdf

I have already purchased some lumber to get started, and will host the first work session this Sunday, April 21st at the Summer practice site (weather permitting).

I probably can’t get down there until after Lunch, so there is plenty of time in the morning for your other interests.

Let’s Make Target Stands

Once more the passage of time (time flies like an arrow, they say) has wrought its depredations on our Barony’s archery target stands. Two years ago, the Debatable Lands A&S community and the Woodworking Guild banded together to make new target stands, and we are planning to do so once again this Sunday, July 18th!

Two of the new stands, at practice.
Two open archery target stands, with archery practice in the background.

Come learn or practice some basic woodworking skills while providing service to the Barony and its Archers! Join us at the Washington Boulevard site from 11am to 2pm, the same time as Archery Practice. Please wear close-toed shoes, and bring your protective gear like gloves, eye protection, and mask.

Captain of Archers Ronan is providing materials, Master Alaric is providing a good set of instructions, and I’ll be bringing tools. Feel free to bring your own tools if you have them.

See you Sunday!

Although the SCA complies with all applicable laws to try to ensure the health and safety of our event participants, we cannot eliminate the risk of exposure to infectious diseases during in-person events. By participating in the in-person events of the SCA, you acknowledge and accept the potential risks. Arts and Sciences in the Park – Sunday

We have been given the go-ahead to have our first Arts and Sciences “practice” this Sunday (May 23rd) from 10am to 1:30pm at the Washington Boulevard site. The parking lot now bisects the site. The Archers will have their practice on the “Large Field” side as usual, and A&S will be over on the “Small Field” side closer to the river. We will finish up promptly by 1:30pm to make room for afternoon practices.

The theme of this gathering is “catching up”. Please bring a project you are working on now, and one or more projects you worked on during the shutdown for show-n-tell. We’ll chat and enjoy being out in the (I hope) sunshine with our artsy/crafty friends.

Attendance is limited to 25 people, and masks are required. We will give everybody the distance they need to be comfortable, so please bring your own seating, water, food, and shade if you desire it. Please note that the parking lot is smaller than it was, and be considerate of others.

Salve Accolens and see you Sunday!
