Hello,
Due to the forecast of thunderstorms and rain on Sunday, Fight Practice will be at the Chinese Christian Church this Sunday, April 15. It will be from 2 till 6 PM. Loaner armor will be available.
This should be the last fight practice at the church, as the weather has generally improved.

Newsletter Quiz!
From Gwendolyn the Graceful, Brehyres, Greetings!
In this digital age, it is relatively easy to find out about upcoming events, deadlines, and other important activities, without reading our newsletters. But sometimes, information in the publications is not easily found elsewhere. And even if it is, the newsletter is a handy way to quickly catch up on the important notices and happenings in our lands.
For example, did you know that recently, His Grace, Duke Christopher, posted information about the Board soliciting feedback on new policies regarding hate speech? Did you know that AEthelmearc was well-represented in the Blackfox Award nominations? You would if you’d read the newsletter!
To encourage us all (me included!) to remember to check out our Kingdom and Baronial newsletters, I am going to try to post shortly after their publication dates with fun challenges. They may be treasure hunts, quizzes, or other kinds of reports. Some will be interactive and some may be notices of tidbits that might be of interest. Both the AEstel and the Althing will be included as they come out.
These games are for glory, amusement, and absolutely no prizes whatsoever! There are no losers! The fun is in finding the answers for yourselves.
So, here is the first installment: a trivia quiz on the most recent AEstel (May 2018):
- What is depicted in the cover photo? (Bonus: which gentle took the photo?)
- There is an officer accepting letters of interest for a deputy position, which are due on May 1. Which Great Officer is it, what is the position being sought, and who is the person holding that post now?
- When will the Kingdom Youth Championship tourney be held?
- How many event announcements are posted in the May AEstel? (Bonus: How many of them are *not* Royal Progress events?)
- How many events are listed on the At-a-Glance page?
My hope is that these questions pique curiosity and foster discussion, particularly of events we might not be aware of because they are not RP’s or they are out of region, or both!
Most importantly, I hope these little teasers inspire y’all to check out the newsletters and keep current!
We’ll do this again soon!
Silva Vulcani Muster This Week
Greetings,
There will be no fencing practice this week because of the Silva Vulcani muster at California University of Pennsylvania.
It starts at 11 Am and ends at 6PM, I encourage everyone who is planning to fence with the rapier army at Pennsic this year to come out and join us as we hone our melee skills.
We will be at Hamer Hall, which is the gym that was used for QRC.
Practice will resume next week at our normal time. We expect to move outdoors next week, so we will be at the Washington Blvd site not the Chinese Church.

Change of Location for Fight Practice April 8

It seems I was overly optimistic about when the Ice Dragon would actually depart. Given a downgrade of the weather forecast, we will be moving Fight Practice to the Pittsburgh Chinese Church from 2 till 6 PM on April 8. Loaner armor will be available.
Sorry for any confusion.

Archery Practice Cancelled for this Week
Due to the cold we will be postponing our weekend archery practice.
April 22nd we will be at the castle, 755 Stone Gate Dr. Wexford PA, for our Barony Archery Muster. Come join us to open the archery season, and shoot some fantastic targets by the honorable Lady Lucetta DiCosimo, and the honorable Lord Derek Archer will be running the shoot off the castle wall.
If you plan to attend and wish to shoot but don’t have your own equipment please let me know ahead of time and I will bring a loaner bow for your use. I do have 4 sets of youth equipment available. They will be first come first served, and will be asked to take turns after equipment has all been loaned out.
-Youre BMDL Captain of Archers Lady Katheryn Täntzel.

The Dos and Don’ts of vigils
In the Barony-Marche of the Debatable Lands, we are amazingly blessed with many dedicated servants to the Crown and the SCA community. Frequently, our friends and neighbors are recognized by the Crown and offered membership in the Peerage order as appropriate to the candidate’s area of expertise. These are the Order of Chivalry, the Order of Defense, the Order of the Laurel, and the Order of the Pelican.
Usually, to celebrate the occasion, just before the elevation to their order, there is a celebration during which the candidate sits in a private or quiet corner, and ponders the upcoming honor with the advice and words of encouragement and inspiration from others. This vigil can be as simple or as elaborate as the candidate desires, and is overseen by friends and supporters.
A big question is: who can visit a vigil? Absolutely anyone can visit the person that is sitting in vigil, whether you know them or not. However, as always, courtesy and respect matter. Here are some recommendations from Her Esteemed Ladyship, The Honorable Lady Mannerly of Knowsalot:
DON’T snarf the food. DO appreciate the attractive and appetizing array of food, but delay eating until after you have spoken with the candidate.
DON’T barge into the candidate’s sitting area. DO find the person who is keeping track of the people waiting to enter and have your name put onto the list of visitors.
DO try to remain in (or return to) the general area so as to be available when you are called.
DO be happy for the candidate! They are receiving an award for their outstanding work in a field they love. Ask about their work, ask about their plans for future endeavors, and above all, if you have words of encouragement, advice, or affection, say them.
After the visit, DO help yourself to the food, chat with the others around, visit with friends, meet new people. There may be a book for people to sign and leave a message, so feel free to do so. Otherwise, go and enjoy the rest of the event.
In service to the Dream,
Elss of Augsburg
