Barony Reception

Food Friends!

Can’t help with reception prep? Want to try a new recipe? Thinking of bringing food for the reception? YAY!

Bring some cut vegetables or fruit. Bake some cookies (we loves our cookie tables!) Bring something that’s gluten-free for our Baron. Make a surprise!

The barony is paying for and providing the ample and delicious food, the brewers’ guild will have their wares available. But I know how we like to just add a little thing here or make a bit for there. Feel free to do something with food! If you are, please let me know at foodguild@debatablelands.aethelmearc.org

Thanks, Elss Augsburg

A&S Activity Round-up!

July is BOOMING with great opportunities for A&S fun. Here’s a round-up of some of the great plans that have been advertised:

Brewers Guild: July Brewers Guild meeting will take place tomorrow, July 10, at Alaric and Elsbeth’s house in the South Hills, starting at 7. We will be making sekanjabin for Pennsic using ingredients from their garden! RSVP appreciated

Woodworking Guild: Join us on Sunday, July 14th for the last Woodworking Guild Shop Day before Pennsic, in Ishiyama’s shop in Point Breeze, from 10am to 2pm.

Archers: This Thursday, July 11th, we will be having baronial archery practice AND an arrow making class at Lord Kumas’ house in Allison Park. Bring any arrow making supplies and a chair with you. Time: 6:30pm

Fiber Guild: This month the BMDL Fiber Guild is going on a field trip! On Friday July 12 at 7 pm we’re going to meet at the the Frick museum in Pittsburgh (not the NYC one) to look at and geek about their four early sixteenth century French and Flemish tapestries, and then look at some medieval paintings and artifacts in their collection. RSVP appreciated.

What else is going on? Any last minute pre-Pennsic workshops or fun activities? Send me a note and I’d be happy to distribute the info far and wide!

Wood Shop Day 04.28 report

It was a bit chillier than expected, and a lot less sunny than hoped for, so we were not able to spread out into the driveway. In spite of the weather, we did manage to get a lot of work done under cover in the garage, much more than one person could have done safely alone, so thanks to everybody who was able to make it. We did a bunch of cutting and shaping to make pieces. Next steps involve cutting joinery onto the pieces, which means a lot of marking of the locations for that joinery first.

The Woodworking Guild’s next planning meeting is scheduled for Thursday, May 23rd from 7pm to 9pm at the Panera in Oakland.

The next Woodworking Guild shop day is scheduled for Sunday, June 2nd, but the time and location has yet to be determined.

Harvest Revel Barony Meeting this Sunday!

Sunday, November 11th, from 11am to 4pm
755 Stonegate Dr, Wexford

Join us for a celebration of the autumn at Eorl Byron and Countess Sir Ariella’s castle in Wexford (755 Stonegate Dr, Wexford, PA). A big thanks to them for opening their home to us again! And what better way to celebrate than thwacking, tossing, singing and PIE! That’s right, we’ll have fighting (heavy and youth), thrown weapons, and archery, plus throwing pumpkins from the parapets (BYOP, no rotten ones – learned that the hard way!).

PIE!
The categories this this for the pie contest are (drumroll…) Period Pie, Traditional Pie and Whimsical Pie!!!

Make sure to bring enough or cut it small, since the judges are YOU! Yes, it’s a populace vote (tokens in a cup)! Each meeting attendee gets 3 tokens and can vote once per category. Gluten free pies always go over well if you are so inclined. The prize is GLORY (and maybe some trinket or two)!!

And if you’ve never encountered the Debatable Lands Harvest Revel Meeting PIE contest before – just about anything counts as pie, if you can name it pie…. “Pumpkin roll? Spatially challenged pie. Cookies? Crustless mini-pies. Pork roast? Deconstructed meat pie. Deviled eggs? Cursed baby chicken pies. BRING IT ALL!
BREWERS ROUNDTABLE
Our Brewing Guildmistress is hosting a Brewers Rountable. The goal of this roundtable is to learn about different beverages – how they taste, how they are made, and what people have learned through the process. Period is preferred, but not at all required. Some level of process documentation is preferred, but not required. Email brewing@debatablelands.aethelmearc.org for questions/info.
There will also be a bake sale fundraiser (non-SCA funds) to benefit the local brewers, so bring cash if you are interested in delicious baked goods!
MONEYERS’ GUILD
The AEthelmearc Moneyer’s Guild will also be meeting sometime during the day.

SCHEDULE
The traditional schedule is:
Thrown Weapons and Archery starts at 11am.
Pie contest runs from noon to 3pm
Choir concert is at 1:45-ish, with a short Court and Barony Meeting announcements to follow.
Fighting (Heavy and Youth) will start after announcements, about 2:15ish.
Pumpkin tossing will happen at such time as feels appropriate. 🙂

NOTES: No garb. Some activities are weather-dependent. BRING PIE and pumpkins!

Wonderful Weekend Works

Hello Debatable Lands!

This weekend was Coronation, and it was a wonderful one for the Debatable Lands!!

We welcome Duke Sven and Duchess Siobhan back into our fold as they completed their reign and saw Their Heir, Queen Anna Leigh invested as the Kingdom’s rightful sovereign. Magistra Luceta DiCosimo was vigiled and elevated to the Most Noble Order of the Laurel in her very own unique style that showcased her own “Worst Case Scenario” with I Genesii folk and friends, Eorl Sir Byron received his Sycamore for his work in the Moneyers Guild, Lady Kathryn Tanzel won an archery tourney, as did Lord Ronan. Comtesse Elena d’Artois was victorious in the Rapier Tourney. There was an Award of Arms for [[name redacted – let’s see if we can surprise them…]] Many of our folks received Golden Escarbuncles and recognition from the Kingdom  Brewers Guild for their work at the Aethelbar at Pennsic (see Madoc if you didn’t get yours!) Vivat to Mistress Arianna as she stepped down from the Kingdom Youth Marshal Office.

Many thanks to those that contributed to the lovely gift basket we were able to present to the Crown: Meesteress Odriana Vander Brugghe, Master Ishiyama, Master Annias, THL Muirgheal Heather H Cogan (who contributed quite a bit!), Mistress Myfanwy, and Don Jorundr.

I saw dozens of Debatable Landers there, participating with honor in the tournaments, supporting each other, working for each other, for the event, for the Royalty, and for the Kingdom. My dear Barony, you are truly the shining jewel of this Kingdom!!

PS: Apologies to those I missed – let me know!

In Levitate et Caritate,
Baroness Hilda
