Due to unforeseen circumstances, Archery Practice will begin at 11:30 am today.
Additionally, we’ve decided to postpone the Stellar Tournament, Sky List (Archery) to next Sunday, April 30th.
Your Archery Marshals today will be Yakub and Baron Brandubh. We wish Ronan a speedy recovery.
After some consideration, I have decided to cancel heavy practice this Sunday. I will not be back from Blackstone Raids in time to collect the loaner gear and run practice. My apologies. See you next week.

This Sunday, April 23rd from 11am to 2pm, we will once again be holding archery practice at the Highland Park practice site. During this week’s practice we will also see the return of the Stellar Tournament series with the first Sky List of the season!
There will be a qualifier shoot happening from 11am until around 12:30pm and then the tournament will begin shortly after. Join us for a fun day of archery and competition as we determine who will be named the next Vindex Coelorum, the Defender of the Sky!

The Barony Officers have chosen to appoint Niall Mac Rædwulf as our new Barony webminister! Niall enters the office with plenty of “Tech in These Current Middle Ages” experience in his work as Ætherial herald and as a deputy Kingdom Webminister. I am excited for the plans Niall has for the site, calendars and communications, and will serve as his deputy as long as he requires.
It has been a pleasure serving as Webminister over the past two years. I thank the officers for giving this SCA newbie a chance, and for the populace for being patient with me as I learned the ropes!

Long ago when the Debatable Lands were newly settled, a group of Viking Age enthusists came together to discuss all things Viking. This Vikingr group lasted many years and even ran events such as the fabled Vetr Things. Sadly, Vikingr faltered as its members passed into memory or out of the Society. However, interest in Viking Age Scandinavia is not gone.
Norse of the next generation, do you want to restart Vikingr?
This group would meet once a month in person on the North side. We would discuss topics related to Viking Age Scandinavia, with a bent towards historical practice and living history.

Debatable Lands Captain of Archers
Now that outdoor practice is starting again, I will be holding in-person sewing from 2-5pm Sunday afternoons. Location is my home, 1105 Shady Ave, Pittsburgh, PA, 15232. Please do not park in the driveway. Times may vary depending on weather or my schedule. If the weather is poor, I may start sewing earlier. Watch Stórfréttir for changes to the regular schedule. I’d like to start this Sunday with a scroll case extravaganza. I have fabric, I have cardboard, I have a power cutter for the cardboard and sewing scissors for the fabric. I have sewing machines and tables, thread, pins, rulers, and markers. The barony needs more scroll cases. Let’s make some scroll cases to start the season. You may bring your own fabric and cardboard and other equipment, but you can’t leave unused supplies here. I’m full of fabric and cardboard.
Going forward feel free to bring any sewing project. If you are interested in making Japanese garments for Iris festival or just because it looks comfortable, this is your chance. If you want fabric recommendations, here you go: linen is really comfortable, ramie is also comfortable and more period, and lightweight hemp is great if you can find it. Look for Robert Kaufman humboldt hemp or just lightweight 100% hemp. There are asian cotton prints, but cotton is somewhat post period. But don’t let that discourage you if you find the perfect pattern. How much you need depends on the fabric width, what you are making, and your size. Check with me for an estimate if you have a fabric in mind and know the width. I usually find nice linen and hemp on etsy.com. I’ve seen lovely ramie fabric on aliexpress.com.

Call For Letters: Exchequer

Greetings, Debatable Lands, from your Exchequer. My term comes to an end this July, and I’m expecting my first child in September, so I’m looking for a successor in the position. If you are interested in being the next Debatable Lands Exchequer, please send a letter of intent to myself and the office of the Seneschal by May 31st, 2023. The job is a few hours of work a month and requires only access to Google Sheets.
Being the exchequer is a very fulfilling job, and I’ve greatly enjoyed getting to see the inner workings of how the Barony handles money. I didn’t know anything about accounting when I started and I’ve learned a lot thanks to the amazing guidance of past exchequers.
