Call for Letters: Comet Pursuivant

Unto the populace of the Barony-Marche of the Debatable Lands, greetings from Gwendolyn the Graceful, Comet Pursuivant!

My term as Herald ends at Twelfth Night and I do not plan on seeking another. I am therefore calling for letters for a replacement. Letters should be sent to myself (herald @ debatablelands.org) and to the Seneschal (seneschal @ debatablelands.org) by November 30. The selection will be made at the December business meeting, Wednesday, December 3.

If you are planning to submit a letter, please be prepared to attend the December 3rd meeting, to discuss your qualifications and plans. The office will change over at Baronial 12th Night, so whomever is selected should plan to attend that as well.

What Does the Pursuivant Do?

The Comet Pursuivant is in charge of all official heraldic business, such as Baronial Courts, Court Reports, and verbal announcements, and nominally has responsibility to assist members of the populace with the design and submission of names and arms (book heraldry). For Court, you will work closely with the Signet and the Baronage to prepare the docket, and you will need to generate and post Court Reports in a timely manner. Luckily, there are a lot of people in the Barony who have expertise in all aspects of heraldry, so candidates do not need to be experts! We will all support whomever gets the position and make sure you have everything you need.

The Comet Pursuivant should also take ownership of the ongoing projects that impact the office. These include: commissioning a replacement tabard and hood, and helping with the ongoing submission of the names and devices of the Baronial awards. The other major project that has been on hold is updating the Baronial Order of Precedence, which will occur through the website transition.

The Comet Pursuivant is one of the offices required to maintain the Barony. They serve on the Financial Committee, and should plan to attend business and social meetings throughout the term whenever possible, as well as events such as Seven Pearls, Pennsic, War Practice, and Coronations, in order to support the Baronage at those events. As with any office, you need to be a paying member of the Society in good standing. You will also need to be a warranted Herald, which is a simple matter of an online form, approved by Silver Buccle. All heralds are expected to submit a brief quarterly report to Silver Buccle, which is also done online.

The most important thing you need is the willingness to do the job! I am happy to continue to support the office’s successor, so if you are interested, please submit a letter of intent to me and the Seneschal no later than November 30!

Looking forward,

Gwen

Reminder: Martial Activities are not at our normal location tomorrow!

Hi, all!

This is a reminder that tomorrow is the Barony Social, and that means martial activities are NOT at our standard Highland Park location. Instead we will be at Parish Hill Barn on Walter Road in North Park: https://maps.app.goo.gl/tbM1RG5ZK6sNAM9x7

Full details can be found on the barony calendar: https://debatablelands.aethelmearc.org/calendar.php

Call for letters Knight Marshal

Greetings Debatable Lands, I have served my second term as group knight marshal and it is time to find a successor. This term is up in October. As such, let this serve as a call for letters of intent for anyone that may be interested in the position.  Mundane concerns have increasingly taken my time resulting in my need to step aside from the office. I still intend to participate where I am able and will maintain my warrant so I can assist or fill in to cover armored and/or rapier practice.

The job is primarily administrative, serving as a group officer on the baronial financial committee, attending officer meetings, running practices, overseeing marshals for all martial activities in the barony, and reporting up through to regional. It has most often been filled by an armored combat marshal, but it is only required that the office holder be a warranted marshal in a martial activity. In order to hold armored practice we would need a marshal in charge should someone without that warrant take the position. Anyone interested should send their letter to me and copy the Baronial Senechal. I would be happy to answer any questions potential applicants may have.

 Yours in service,

Sir Guillaume

September Fencing Activities Schedule

Greetings, Debatable Lands fencers!

We are back on our fencing monthlies schedule after Pennsic, with Melee practice this Sunday, September 7th, and Cut and Thrust Practice on Sunday, September 21st.

In addition, on September 14th, we will NOT be at our regular location. That’s the day of the Barony Social, and we’ll be holding fencing practice there instead, along with the next Stellar Tournament.

Keep an eye on the schedule for next month — we have two nearby events (Archers to the Wald and Agincourt) that will have fencing activities!

Yours in Service,

Swordmaster Robert MacEwin of Thornhill
Debatable Lands Fencing Marshal

Barony Social on Sunday, Sept 14th at the Parish Hill Barn, North Park

Salve accolens,

Let’s have some more baronial activities with our martial practice. To facilitate this, we have reserved Parish Hill Barn on Walter Road in North Park: here https://maps.app.goo.gl/tbM1RG5ZK6sNAM9x7 on Sunday, Sept 14th, starting at noon. The two story building has a kitchen and picnic tables downstairs, a big open room upstairs, a back patio and porch with wooden picnic tables, a large field at one end big enough for heavy and fencing practice, and nice wooded path behind the building, plenty of additional parking just up the hill https://maps.app.goo.gl/ukooa4qPUET34cXs6

Come hang out and sew, or knit, or braid, or fence, or weave, or paint sheet walls, or dye.

I’ve contacted Broom who will be bringing the new sheetwalls. You can paint comets on them. Dyeing outside the kitchen is planned as well. The big room upstairs will hopefully be shared between skyguard for arrow work and others who are doing other crafts. Please note, if you want tables or chairs upstairs you should bring folding tables and chairs. Bring a picnic lunch, or a bento box if you want lunch or a snack.

This site is not handicap accessible. There are steps to get into the building and the restrooms are only downstairs. The restrooms are large, but the stalls are not wheelchair accessible.
